Internal Maintenance - Roll Log Files Automatically at Midnight

ipMonitor's Internal Maintenance feature allows you to perform reoccurring maintenance actions on your ipMonitor installation. Among the various configurable tasks is the ability to automatically roll specified log files on a daily basis.

By default, ipMonitor generates four separate log files to provide Administrators with information necessary for diagnostic and troubleshooting purposes. Over time, these files will continue to grow in size unless 'rolled' at regular intervals. When a log file is rolled, ipMonitor renames the file to include the current date and creates a new, empty log file in its place.

In order to better manage the size of ipMonitor's log files, the Internal Maintenance feature provides the ability to automatically roll log files daily, shortly after midnight.

Example

ipMonitor's reoccurring Internal Maintenance scheduler is hard-coded into the Maintenance Schedule list. To enable automatic log file rolling, proceed with the following:

  1. Log in to the ipMonitor Administration web interface.
  2. Click the Automation menu option and select Maintenance Schedules, then click the Reoccurring ipMonitor Maintenance link.
  3. Place a checkmark in the Roll Log Files checkbox.
  4. By default, the ipm.log and snmptrap.log files are automatically rolled when this option is enabled. To add additional log files, click the Add Log File button.

Note: Log files must be located in the ipMonitor/logs directory in order to be rolled as part of this maintenance action.

  1. Click OK to save your settings.
Additional Information

In addition to allowing you to roll log files on a daily basis, the Internal Maintenance feature provides the ability to enable three other possible maintenance tasks.
