Working with XML Files
ipMonitor provides the ability to export and import configuration settings in XML format. Using this feature, you can:
- Import and export settings between ipMonitor and other management solutions.
- Move components from one ipMonitor configuration to another.
- Make mass configuration setting changes to Monitors, Groups, Alerts, Profiles, Maintenance Schedules and Report Generators.
Example
The following quick tips are intended to assist you when working with XML files.
Exporting Settings:
- Access the Export Settings screen by clicking the Settings menu option, then selecting Export Settings.
- When exporting, the XML file will be displayed in a new web browser window. To save the output, simply click the File menu option, then select Save As.... When prompted, select a target directory and enter a file name.
- Use the search-and-replace feature of your text editor to make mass changes to your configuration settings. Although you can use Notepad to perform this task, other text editors such as UltraEdit and TextPad will allow you to use Regular Expressions in order to better target the changes you wish to apply.
Importing Settings:
- Access the Import Settings screen by clicking the Settings menu option, then selecting Import Settings.
- 'Root' <export> and </export> tags must be present at the top and bottom of the file for ipMonitor to be able to import it.
- Ensure that the file name ends in the .XML extension.
- The file being imported is relative to ipMonitor, and is not uploaded via HTTP or HTTPS. Instead, the ipMonitor Service attempts to locate and open the file. Therefore, if the XML file is not located on the ipMonitor host system, a UNC path must be used and the ipMonitor Service must have the appropriate privileges to open the file.
Additional Information
Exporting your ipMonitor configuration using the Export Settings option should not be used as the primary method of backing up ipMonitor. In order to fully back up your ipMonitor configuration, we recommend using the Internal Maintenance feature.
