Mail Server Settings

By default, ipMonitor will perform MX record lookups and then attempt to send email messages directly to the recipient domain's SMTP server. This allows ipMonitor to rely on one server (the recipient mail server), instead of two (the recipient mail server and possibly a routing mail server).

Your network policy, however, may require that ipMonitor route its mail through a designated mail server. This can be accomplished by clicking Server Settings from the Settings menu option, and entering the IP address or domain name of the designated SMTP server into the SMTP Relay Server field. In the event that the designated mail server is unavailable, ipMonitor reverts back to using MX record lookups.

The Email Delivery section also allows you to specify the IP address of a backup DNS Server for ipMonitor to use when performing MX record lookups. In the event that your primary DNS server stops responding, ipMonitor will contact the DNS server entered into this field.

Note: The DNS Server setting is only used for looking up MX records for email delivery.

Additional Information

When configured to send email directly, ipMonitor uses MX records to locate the recipient's SMTP server. If email is not reaching the destination mailbox, check the TCP/IP settings for the ipMonitor host machine to ensure that it has been properly assigned at least one DNS Server.
