Reducing Redundant Alerts

In most networks, traffic must travel through certain devices to access other sections of the network. When these devices are not available, traffic from one part of the network will not be able to reach the other. To help limit the number of Alerts sent when critical devices fail, ipMonitor allows you to create dependency relationships between the critical device Monitors and the Monitors for resources that lay beyond these devices.

Example

To configure a dependency relationship, proceed with the following:

  1. To create a Group click the Groups button on the navigation menu, followed by the Add Group button.
  2. Enter a Group Name.
  3. Click the Add Members button to add any Monitors that require critical devices to the Group.
  4. Click the Add Dependencies button to add the critical device Monitors.
  5. Edit any of the critical device Monitors. Ensure that the Delays Between Tests While: Up and Delays Between Tests While: Warn intervals are significantly less than any of the items that depend on it.

Note: In order to be able to properly suppress redundant Alerts, the Monitors targeting critical resources need to reach the "red" or "failure" state prior to the Monitors that require it. One additional way to make critical resource Monitors reach the "red" state faster is to trigger Alerts on fewer failures. This is accomplished by lowering the Accumulated Failures per Alert value of the critical resource Monitors.
