Licensing ipMonitor

When you purchase an upgrade version or a new version of ipMonitor, you will receive instructions from ipMonitor sales or from your ipMonitor reseller on how to access the ipMonitor Portal.

To License the ipMonitor Trial, you will:

  1. Download the Full Version of ipMonitor from the ipMonitor Portal.
  2. Install the Full Version over the top of the Trial version.
  3. Access the ipMonitor Configuration Program and select the Software Licensing option.
  4. Click License ipMonitor to start the ipMonitor Licensing Helper.
  5. Choose either Direct or Indirect Communications.
  6. Log in to the ipMonitor Portal.
  7. Enter your installation's Site Code (The Direct communications method sends the Site Code automatically).
  8. Choose the product you wish to license.
  9. Retrieve your License Key to run ipMonitor in Licensed Mode rather than 21-day Trial mode.

Items to note:

  • Any configuration settings you specify while working with the Trial version are preserved, and will not be lost when the full version of ipMonitor is installed.
  • Incremental Upgrades to ipMonitor do not require that you reacquire your License key.
  • 7-day Emergency Licenses are made available as a Customer Service courtesy in case of hardware failures or similar issues that render you unable to properly Park the ipMonitor license.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN

When you purchase ipMonitor, an account is created for you in the ipMonitor Support Portal. The Portal is used to manage licensing for your installation and allows you to access support-related information. Licensing ipMonitor requires that you log in to the ipMonitor Support Portal and perform a Licensing transaction for your installation.

ipMonitor includes a Licensing Helper application that takes care of most Licensing details for you. It supports two methods of operation:

  1. The Direct communications method opens a connection to the ipMonitor Portal using SOAP (XML over HTTPS).
    • Very little user input is required.
    • You must enter your User Name and Password when prompted.
    • You will need to select a license from the list of available licenses for your organization.

  2. The Indirect communications method launches a Web browser and connects to the ipMonitor Portal.
    • Although this method is more transparent, it also requires slightly more manual input.
    • You must log in to the Portal manually and navigate to the licensing center.
    • You will need to select a license from the list of available licenses for your organization.
    • After you have generated a Site Key for your installation, you will need to cut and paste it back into the Licensing Helper to complete the transaction.

Note: No matter which of the two methods you select, you will need the User Name and temporary Password you received from ipMonitor, or from your ipMonitor reseller to log in to the ipMonitor Support Portal.

Starting the Licensing Helper

After you have installed the full version of ipMonitor, the Configuration Program will automatically launch in "First Run" mode.

Click the Click Here to License ipMonitor button:

When the ipMonitor Licensing Helper starts, it will request that you select either Direct or Indirect method of communications (discussed below).

Top of page

Direct Method of Communication

The Direct method of communication uses SOAP, specifically XML over HTTPS for communications between the Licensing Helper and the ipMonitor Portal.

Assuming your LAN uses a proxy server, if Internet Explorer is configured with the names and ports of the proxy servers for your LAN, the Licensing Helper will use those settings (if forced) to attempt connecting to the ipMonitor Support Portal through your organization's proxy.

When prompted by the Licensing Helper, enter the User Name and the Password you received from ipMonitor, or from your ipMonitor reseller to log in to the ipMonitor Portal.

Available Licenses for your account will be displayed. Select the License (number of Monitors) you would like to use for this installation.

Click Next to complete Licensing ipMonitor.

If you return to the ipMonitor Configuration Program's Software Licensing option, your registration information will be displayed.

Note: If you experience problems using the Direct method of communication, revert to the Indirect method of communication for Licensing ipMonitor.

Indirect Method of Communication

When the Indirect method of communication is selected, the Licensing Helper acquires the SiteCode for your ipMonitor installation from the ipMonitor Configuration program (Step 2).

Click the Open button to launch a Web browser window and connect to the ipMonitor Portal Login page.

Enter the User Name and Password you received directly from ipMonitor, or from your ipMonitor reseller to log in to the ipMonitor Portal.

Click the more link within the Activate Your ipMonitor License section to navigate to the licensing center and view a list of available licenses for your organization.

Click the Activate button for the License you would like to use for this installation.

If you haven't already done so, install the full version of ipMonitor 8.5 and click the Next button.

Choose to Communicate indirectly using your web browser.

Enter your SiteCode in the textbox provided. Check I agree to uninstall ipMonitor 8.5 (or park the License) before reformatting the host machine, and then click the Next button. An Activation Key will be generated for your SiteCode.

Cut and paste your Activation Key from your internet web browser into the Licensing Helper screen and click Finish to License your ipMonitor Installation.

Generate an Emergency License for ipMonitor

With the assistance of the Licensing Manager located on the ipMonitor Support Portal, it is possible for ipMonitor customers to generate their own 7-day Emergency License. This tool is provided as a Customer Service courtesy to assist with cases of hardware failure or similar issues that render customers unable to properly Park the ipMonitor license.

For example, you may find yourself in need of an Emergency License if:

  • An external system issue affects the ipMonitor Activation system, setting your fully licensed installation to "Trial" mode.
  • A hardware failure occurs on the machine hosting ipMonitor, making it necessary to install the software on another system.
  • ipMonitor is erroneously removed from the server using an unsupported method that did not result in the license being parked on the Support Portal.

Because the Emergency License expires at the end of 7 days, a request for a permanent license is placed automatically with the ipMonitor Technical Support department when a temporary license is issued.

For more information, refer to the Support article titled Generate an Emergency License for ipMonitor.

Note1: If you want to move ipMonitor from one computer to another, you will first need to Park your License in the ipMonitor Portal. For more information, refer to the Technical Reference section titled Parking your ipMonitor License.

Note2: When a new ipMonitor Portal account is created, you are assigned a User Name and temporary Password, which you will have received directly from ipMonitor or from your ipMonitor reseller. You will be able to change your password after logging in to the ipMonitor Portal.
