Quick Reports

ipMonitor's Quick Reports can be accessed from the submenu bar of an individual Monitor or a Group of Monitors, giving you instant access to statistics data recorded by that Monitor or Group. Quick Reports are ideal for troubleshooting problems as they happen and for identifying short-term and long-term performance trends at a glance.

In addition to Response Time, Uptime and Downtime, ipMonitor's ability to leverage Time Series Data allows you to view data averages for CPU, Memory, Battery, Hard Drive and Bandwidth Usage Monitors.

Quick Reports can be accessed by clicking the View Report button located on the submenu screen of any Edit Monitor page.

The flexibility of Quick Reports makes it possible to:

  • View statistics data displayed in line graphs, vertical bar graphs, horizontal bar graphs, area graphs, resource icons and in tables.
  • Compare data spanning multiple time periods.
  • Drill-down to view an hour's worth of data, or pull back to view a day, a week or a month's worth of recorded statistics.
  • Zoom in to Report data for a particular time period and crop Reports based on anomalies visible within any graph.
  • Use the clearly marked Test indicators that appear in Zoomed Reports for one-hour time periods to view operational parameters, failure points, error codes and other information pertaining to a specific Monitor.
  • Cycle through statistics data based on any time period you select.
  • Browse to the recorded statistics of any date in time using the Calendar feature.
  • Email a Report to an individual recipient or multiple recipients.
  • Save the Report to the My Reports tab of the Admin Dashboard.
  • Print the Report using your web browser's print capabilities.

Monitor Quick Reports

To access a Quick Report for an individual Monitor, proceed with the following:

  1. Log in to the ipMonitor web interface.
  2. Click the Monitors menu option, and then click the Name of the desired Monitor.
  3. Click the View Report button located on the submenu bar of the Edit Monitor screen.

Note: The data types included within the graphs and tables generated are directly based on the type of statistics data supported by the Monitor.

The Quick Report is self-contained within its own Report Browser frame. The menu bar located at the top of the screen makes it easy to navigate through the various available configuration options.

Cancel / Back
Click the Cancel / Back button to return to the Edit Monitor screen at any time. Alternatively, you can also use the Admin Menu located on the side pane to navigate away from the Quick Report.

Calendar
The Calendar feature is used to configure the Quick Report to render data based on a standard or custom range of selected minutes, hours, days, weeks or months. It does so by "anchoring" (designating a dynamic start point for your time selection window) the Report to a particular point in time and shifting the time window either forward or backward through time to display different time periods.

ipMonitor's Reports provide a great deal of granularity, which is ideal when focusing in on a small time period, such as an hour. It effectively ensures that the time selection of the Report does not change as you cycle through various time periods, and that you'll always be provided with relevant data for the equivalent length of time.

In addition, you can also choose to compare two different time periods side-by-side, as shown in the Calendar example image below.

Selecting Days, Weeks or Months
Use the navigational arrows located to either side of the Month and Year displayed in the Calendar's header to update the date pane.

  • To anchor the Report to a particular day, click on that day to highlight it in yellow.
  • To choose a week, click on the double arrows located to the left of any week. Once selected, the entire week will be highlighted in yellow.
  • To select an entire month, click the double arrow pointing down located to the left of the Day header. The entire month will then be highlighted in yellow.

Selection Type
The Selection Type options are made available to narrow the scope of the Calendar. Four options are available:

  • None - This option is only available when disabling a Comparison Selection. Specifying that no Selection Type should be used instructs ipMonitor to create a simple Report using only one time selection.
  • Normal - The Normal Time Selection enables the standard input mode, allowing you to choose entire days, weeks or months using the arrow indicators.
  • Date Range - The Date Range Time Selection allows you to choose a custom time period that spans days, weeks or months. Enabling this option will display a second calendar alongside the first, making it easy to select your desired start and end dates.
  • Recent Activity - The Recent Activity Time Selection makes it possible to customize the time period of the Report down to the exact hour, minute and second desired using any Time Zone of your choice.

Quick Select
The Quick Select drop-down box allows you to choose any one of the most frequently selected time periods and apply it to the Calendar instantly. The following options are available:

  • Last 15 Minutes
  • Last 30 Minutes
  • Last 60 Minutes
  • This Hour
  • Last Hour
  • Today
  • Yesterday
  • Last 24 Hours
  • This Week
  • Last 7 Days
  • Last Week
  • This Month
  • Last Month

Note: In order for your Quick Select time period to be applied to the Calendar, you must click the Select button adjacent to the drop-down box.

Time
Specify the exact time to which you wish to anchor this Report using the following format:

hour :: minute :: second

Note: ipMonitor uses a 24-hour clock (also known as Military Time) as its standard time notation. For example, to anchor the report to 2PM, you'd enter in the following:

14:00:00

Advance / Backtrack
Now that you have navigated to a specific point in time and established a dynamic start point used to anchor the Report's Time Selection window, you can select the exact length of time you wish to report upon:

  • Advance [x] Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds - Selecting this option instructs the Report time frame to begin at the current second, minute, hour, day, week, month or year (as configured) and go forward the desired length of time. The resulting time period will be displayed in the Report.
  • Backtrack [x] Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds - Selecting this option instructs the Report time frame to begin at the current second, minute, hour, day, week, month or year (as configured) and go back the desired length of time. The resulting time period will be displayed in the Report.

Note: Use the triangular up and down graphical indicators to toggle between Advance and Backtrack mode.

Time Zone
By default, ipMonitor will use the Time Zone specified in your Operating System settings. To change this selection, choose a new time zone from the drop-down list.

Zoom
ipMonitor's efficient database system retains all Monitor test results, making it possible to zoom in to Reports based on visible data points to expose operational parameters and error messages.

Click the Zoom button to pop up the opaque Zoom Windows over every graph visible in a Report. Use the side grippers to resize a Zoom Window, or simply drag the entire window to a desired spot.

Note: Clicking the Cancel button at the top of the page will hide the Zoom Windows.

When all desired Zoom Windows have been adjusted, click the Zoom button that appears at the top of the page to generate a new Report. The start time and overall length of the Report will shift to encompass your chosen time frame.

Note: Dragging or resizing a Zoom Window will cause all other windows using the same time parameters to automatically shift to match the selected time range, giving you an accurate, entirely new Report.

When you've zoomed in to an hour's worth of data or less, Event Points will appear. They'll be displayed as color-coded arrows indicating that Record Details are available to display information for a particular point in time. This feature is ideal for learning the exact cause of a failure or data spike as you analyze Report information.

Previous
Click the Previous button to browse through Reports using the time period selected. By default, Quick Reports are generated based on an hourly time frame. Clicking the Previous button allows you to view a Quick Report for the previous hour.

Next
Click the Next button to cycle through Reports using the time period selected. By default, Quick Reports are generated based on an hourly time frame. Clicking the Next button allows you to view a Quick Report for the following hour, assuming statistics have already been recorded for that hour (Reports generated for a future time period will be blank).

Settings
Click the Settings button to change the Report Elements and Data Types to be displayed, and to choose your preferred graphical display method.

Report Width (in pixels)
Specify the width of the Report to be generated, in pixels. In addition to manually entering in your preferred width, you can also choose from three preconfigured options:

  • Fit to Browser - The Report will automatically reflow to fit the size of your current browser window.
  • Portrait - The Report will be optimized for printing using Portrait mode (the height of the page will be greater than its width).
  • Landscape - The Report will be optimized for printing using Landscape mode (the width of the page will be greater than its height).

Graph Type
Use the drop-down selector to choose the style of graph desired. Three options are available:

  1. Area Graph - This style of graph consists of one or more lines plotted on an X-Y grid. In contrast to a Line Graph, the area between the margin and the line of the graph is filled in with solid color for added emphasis.
  2. Bar Graph - This style of graph consists of vertical bars that represent Monitor data. The height of each bar is proportionate to the amount of data it represents.
  3. Line Graph - This style of graph consists of one or more lines plotted on an X-Y grid. In contrast to an Area Graph, the area between the margin and the line of the graph is transparent. Line Graphs are ideal for displaying trends in values over a continuous scale.

Include the Following Report Elements
The Report Settings page allows you to choose whether to hide or display the following Report Elements:

  • Graphs - Uncheck this option to hide all Availability, Downtime, Uptime, Response Time and individual Resource Monitor graphs.
  • Data Tables - Uncheck this option to hide all Data Tables listing Monitor information.
  • Monitor Events - Uncheck this option to hide the Monitor Events Table displaying all events recorded during a specified time period.

Include the following Data Types
Based on the Monitor types you selected in the previous step, the Add Report Wizard suggests a number of data types to be included in the Report from those available:

  • Availability - The percentage of time the Monitor has been available. This value is calculated based on Coverage time minus the length of time the Monitor was in a Warn, Down, or Lost state.
  • Uptime - The length of time the Monitor has been in an Up state. When displayed in a graph, this value is shown as a percentage (i.e. 99.812%). When displayed in a table, this value is shown as a time interval (i.e. 23:15:02s, indicating the Monitor has been Up for 23 hours, 15 minutes and 2 seconds).
  • Downtime - The length of time the Monitor has been in a Warn, Down or Lost state. When displayed in a graph, this value is shown as a percentage (i.e. 0.1769%). When displayed in a table, this value is shown as a time interval (i.e. 1:03:06s, indicating the Monitor has been Down for 1 hour, 3 minutes and 6 seconds).
  • Response Time - The length of time it took the test packet to reach the monitored resource and return a response to ipMonitor. Response time is measured in milliseconds (ms).
  • Current Status (Icon) - The current Monitor state, represented by a colored icon:

        • Green: Up/Listening

        • Amber: Warn

        • Bright Red: Down

        • Dark Red: Lost

        • Gray: Uninitialized / Suspended / In Maintenance / Disabled
  • Current Status (Last Result) - The last Test Result received by the Monitor. For detailed information on Test Results, refer to the Last Status section of the documentation pertaining to the Monitor type in question.
  • Battery Capacity - The current capacity of the battery being monitored, shown as a percentage. This data type applies only to Battery Monitors.
  • Free Memory - The amount of free physical memory on the system being monitored, shown in megabytes (MB). This data type applies only to Memory Monitors, and will only be displayed within a table.

  • Humidity - The humidity level response received from the humidity sensor, expressed as a percentage.
  • Temperature - The temperature response received from the sensor, displayed in either Fahrenheit (F) or Celsius (C) format.

Maximum Data Types per Table
To prevent the Report from becoming unwieldy, ipMonitor restricts the number of columns per table to 7 by default. When that limit is reached, additional data types will be displayed in another table located directly below the first one. Change the default Maximum Data Types per Table limit to display additional columns, or to further restrict the number of columns per table.

Adjust the Unit Preferences
Quick Reports generated for Temperature and Bandwidth Monitors allow you to choose your desired Unit Preference:

  • Temperature Monitor - Select whether to view the Temperature value retrieved by the Monitor in Fahrenheit or Celsius format.
  • Bandwidth Monitor - Select whether to view the Transfer Rate retrieved by the Monitor as KB/s (1024 bytes per second) or kb/s (1000 bits per second).

Group Quick Reports

The process of generating Group Quick Reports is similar to that of generating Monitor Quick Reports:

  1. Log in to the ipMonitor Administration interface.
  2. Click the Groups menu option, and then click the Name of the desired Group.
  3. Click the View Report button located on the submenu bar of the Edit Group screen.

Note: Statistical information for individual Group Members will be displayed in tabular format. However, Availability and Response Time graphs will be generated for Group Dependencies.

  • Resource Icons - Resource Icons show iconic representations of data averages for CPU, Memory, Battery, Temperature, Humidity, Hard Drive and Bandwidth Usage Monitors. They are only available for Group Reports.
  • Bar Graph - Bar Graphs are used to display Monitor information (such as Availability and Response time) as horizontal bars located below one another. The width of the bars is directly proportionate to the amount of data they represent, making it easy to perform at-a-glance comparisons between multiple Monitors. Horizontal Bar Graphs are only available for Group Reports.

Note: Standard graphs (such as vertical bar graphs, area graphs or line graphs) showing Availability and Response Time will only be generated for Group Dependencies.

The data types included within the graphs and tables generated are directly based on the type of statistics data supported by the Monitors included in the Group.

The Quick Report is self-contained within its own Report Browser frame. The menu bar located at the top of the screen makes it easy to navigate through the various configuration options.

For information on the available configuration options, please refer to the Monitor Quick Reports section of this document.
