Live Reports

ipMonitor's Live Reports allow you to proactively monitor availability and performance quality for any resource on your network.

Using ipMonitor's Live Reports, you can:

  • Spot trouble at a glance using the color-coded icons.
  • Be alerted audibly when trouble occurs.
  • Limit the display to show only specific Monitor states.
  • Focus in on a Group in NOC or Details View to obtain detailed information about the state of all Monitors in that specific Group.

Group Status

The Group Status screen, conveniently located in the Admin Dashboard, allows you to view a summary of all Groups currently available in your ipMonitor installation. This screen is updated periodically, as shown by the animated indicator located in the top-right corner.

The Group Status screen allows you to determine the state of a Group at a glance. It also reports the Group's overall statistics: Monitors currently in a Lost, Down, Warn, Up or Offline state, as well as the total number of Monitors in the Group.

Note: Groups inherit the most critical state of any enabled Monitor(s) they contain. The display order of Groups in the Group Status list is determined by the critical state of each Group.

Dependencies assigned to a Group are listed based on the state of the Monitor. This listing corresponds to the order of Monitor states shown prior to the Dependencies column: Lost, Down, Warn, Up, Offline, Total.

For example, a Dependencies listing of: 0 / 0 / 0 / 2 / 0 / 2 indicates that the Group contains two Dependencies, which are both reporting as Up:

To edit a Group, simply click the icon located in the Edit column corresponding to the Group you wish to edit. You'll be directed to the Edit Group screen, where you can add or remove Member and Dependency Monitors, change the Group Name, etc.

Clicking the Toggle Full Screen button located on the Group Status submenu bar allows you to view a color-coded full screen summary of your Monitors and Groups. Click the button again to return to the Admin Dashboard Status screen.

The Refresh, Filter and Audible Alarm settings for the Group Status page can all be configured by clicking the Settings for this Page button located on the Group Status submenu bar.

Note: These settings are applied globally throughout the installation. Any modifications made here will also be reflected in the My Settings interface, effectively overwriting prior settings.

Refresh Delay
Enter the number of minutes to delay between page refreshes. By default, the Group Status page will reload after 1 minute.

Sound if failures are showing
When the audible alarm is enabled, ipMonitor will play the selected sound as soon as a Monitor enters a warning state.

Note: This feature requires a sound enabled computer and a .wav plug-in compatible with your current browser. Click the Test button to hear the various sounds available and to ensure that your system is properly configured to play sounds.

Row Filter
The options provided allow you to select the Monitors to be displayed within the Group Status View Screen:

  • Hide Monitors that are offline (gray) - If a Monitor is disabled, not initialized, suspended or in maintenance mode, it appears gray in color. When this option is enabled, Groups containing only disabled or suspended Monitors are not displayed in the Groups Status list.
  • Hide Monitors in Pass State (green) - If a large number of Groups are configured, you may choose to display only those Groups containing Monitors that have detected a problem. When this option is enabled, Groups only containing Monitors in a Pass state are not displayed in the Group Status list.
  • Hide Monitors in Warn State (yellow) - When this option is enabled, Groups inheriting the Warn state are not displayed in the Group Status list.
  • Hide Monitors in Fail State (red) - When this option is enabled, Groups inheriting the Fail state are not displayed in the Group Status list.
  • Hide Monitors in Lost State (dark red) - When this option is enabled, Groups inheriting the Lost state are not displayed in the Group Status list.

Make This My Start Page
Clicking the Make This My Start Page button will designate the previously accessed Group Status screen as your new Start Page. Upon your next login to the ipMonitor web interface, you'll be automatically directed to that screen.

Note: If you applied a Filter before selecting the Group Status screen as your new Start Page, that same Filter will continue to be applied upon subsequent logins to ipMonitor.

Details View of Group

To view details pertaining to individual Monitors within a Group, click on the Group Name in the Group Status screen.

The Details View of Group screen displays the state of all Monitors within a specific Group.

Seven columns are visible by default within the Details View of Group screen:

  • Status - The current status of the Monitor.
  • Monitor Name - The name of the Monitor. To edit a Monitor's settings, simply click on the Monitor Name to launch the Edit Monitor screen.
  • Type - The type of Monitor configured.
  • Last Result - The result of the last test performed by the Monitor. Different Monitor types generate specific Test Results and Error Codes in accordance with the technical capabilities of the Monitor. Please refer to the specific Monitor section for a detailed explanation of the Test Results and Error Codes reported.
  • Availability - The percentage of time the Monitor has been available. This calculation is based on Coverage time.
  • Coverage - The total length of time ipMonitor has been monitoring the resource. Coverage specifically excludes any period while the Monitor is suspended, disabled, or in maintenance mode. This value is reset when ipMonitor is restarted.
  • State Change - The length of time since the Monitor changed operational states. This includes time elapsed since scheduled maintenance.

In addition to the default columns outlined above, you can also add supplementary columns to display more information about the Monitors being shown by clicking the Settings for this Page button located on the submenu bar.

Note: These settings are applied globally throughout the installation. Any modifications made here will also be reflected in the My Settings interface, effectively overwriting prior settings.

Add Column
Click the Add Column button to bring up the new column configuration screen.

Column Name
Enter a concise, descriptive name for the new column.

Value Kind
Three types of values are available to choose from:

1. Intrinsic Property - This option allows you to view a fundamental Monitor property that is hard-coded and cannot be changed. Options include:

  • ID
  • Name
  • Type
  • Status
  • State Change
  • Last Result
  • Availability
  • Coverage
  • Failures
  • Critical Failures
  • Alerts Sent
  • Next Run
  • Last Run
  • In Progress

2. Configuration Setting - This option allows you to view a specific configurable Monitor setting by entering a path to an XML tag used within the Monitor's internal configuration. XML tags can be found by obtaining a popup XML from the submenu bar of the Edit Monitor screen.

Example:
To display the Port Number used by a particular Monitor to test a resource, you would enter the following XML Path: nv/port

This path can be obtained by clicking the Popup XML button located on the submenu bar of the Edit Monitor screen.

Note: Available configuration settings are dependent upon the type of Monitor configured. For example, not every Monitor uses a Port Number to connect to a resource. In this case, the Port Number column created will be blank when a Monitor that does not use this setting is displayed.

3. Tag - This option allows you to view Monitor Tags that match specific criteria.

Example:
To display Tags with the word "Important" in the title, simply enter this keyword in the Tag Name field.

Note: This column will remain blank for any Monitors that do not contain a Tag that meets the specified criteria.

Include an anchor to the appropriate Monitor
When this option is enabled, the content of the custom column will be hyperlinked. Clicking this link allows you to navigate directly to the Edit Monitor screen for the Monitor being displayed.

Column Width
Specify the width of the custom column. Entering an asterisk (*) character instructs ipMonitor to automatically determine the column width based on any remaining space available. You can also specify the column width manually, as an "em" value. An "em" value determines font size based on the default browser settings.

Remove Columns
Check the checkbox beside the name of the column you want to permanently remove. To select all columns, check the Column Name checkbox in the Display Settings: Details View title bar. A confirmation prompt will be displayed prior to removing the selected column(s).

Refresh Delay
Enter the number of minutes to delay between page refreshes. By default, the Details View page will reload after 1 minute.

Row Filter
The options provided allow you to select the Monitors to be displayed within the Details View of Group screen.

Make This My Start Page
Clicking the Make This My Start Page button will designate the previously accessed Details View of Group screen as your new Start Page. Upon your next login to the ipMonitor web interface, you'll be automatically directed to that screen.

Note: If you applied a Filter before selecting the Details View of Group screen as your new Start Page, that same Filter will continue to be applied upon subsequent logins to ipMonitor.

Full Screen: NOC View

While in Full Screen mode, you can click the NOC View button to access the live NOC View. Most often displayed in a network operations center environment, the NOC View provides at a glance status reports for IT personnel and network operations groups who manage the network around the clock.

The NOC View uses color codes to prioritize individual Monitors within a Group. When ipMonitor detects a problem, the resource color changes from green to amber and may progress to red and dark red as ipMonitor detects successive failures.

As this process occurs, the interface is reflowed to move the failing Monitor(s) to the top of the list. At a glance, you will know where to direct your troubleshooting efforts even before ipMonitor begins the Alerting process. With web browser sounds enabled, you can also be alerted audibly.

Click the Settings for this Page button to select the status fields to be displayed within the NOC View. Information detailing available configuration settings can be viewed in the Group Status section of this document, with two notable additions:

Cell Width
The width (selected as a percentage of available space, pixels, or "em" units) of the displayed Monitor element. This allows the number of displayed data elements to be controlled.

Cell Height
The height (in pixels or "em" units) of the displayed Monitor element. This allows the number of displayed data elements to be controlled.

Row Filter
The options provided allow you to select the Monitors to be displayed within the Details View of Group screen.

Note: These settings are applied globally throughout the installation. Any modifications made here will also be reflected in the My Settings interface, effectively overwriting prior settings.

Make This My Start Page
Clicking the Make This My Start Page button will designate the previously accessed Full Screen: Details or NOC View as your new Start Page. Upon your next login to the ipMonitor web interface, you'll be automatically directed to that screen.

Note: If you applied a Filter before selecting the Full Screen: Details or NOC View as your new Start Page, that same Filter will continue to be applied upon subsequent logins to ipMonitor.

Use the Details View and the Toggle Full Screen buttons to access the Details View and the Admin Dashboard Status screens at any time.
