Exchange Round-Trip Email Wizard

The Exchange Round-Trip Email Wizard is designed to help you configure an IMAP4 - QA, POP3 - QA, or MAPI - QA Monitor with the least amount of initial input. There are a number of benefits to this approach:

  • Configuration is fast and easy, allowing you to get the Monitor up and running quickly.
  • The Exchange Round-Trip Email Wizard allows you to test all the parameters you enter along the way to make sure that the new Monitor will work as expected immediately upon being enabled to go live in a production environment.

IMPORTANT! Before creating a MAPI - QA Monitor using the Exchange Round-Trip Email Wizard, please note that the MAPI - QA Monitor requires:

  1. Access to the messaging subsystem of Microsoft Outlook.

Note: A full version of Microsoft Outlook that supports the MAPI protocol must be installed on the ipMonitor server for this purpose. However, the Microsoft Outlook application itself does not need to be running in order for the Monitor to function correctly.

  1. A Microsoft Outlook Email Account to exist under the default Mail Profile of the Windows User Account impersonated by the Monitor.

For additional, detailed information on configuring an IMAP4 - QA, POP3 - QA, or MAPI - QA Monitor, refer to the following documents:

Step 1: Select Email Protocol

Note: The images used to illustrate the following example display the configuration process for creating a POP3 - QA Monitor.

Available Protocols

POP3
The POP3 - QA Monitor tests the ability of your SMTP server to receive and distribute email, as well as the ability of your end-users to log in from a POP3-enabled client and retrieve their mail.

IMAP4
The IMAP4 - QA Monitor tests the ability of your SMTP server to receive and distribute email, as well as the ability of your end-users to log in from an IMAP4-enabled email client and retrieve their mail.

MAPI
The MAPI - QA Monitor tests the ability of your SMTP mail server to deliver an email message to an Exchange Server Mailbox and then retrieve the message via Microsoft's Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI).

Step 2: Specify Exchange Server Parameters

Note: For detailed configuration help targeted to the IMAP4, POP3, or MAPI protocol selected in the previous step, refer to the following documents:

Email Send Settings

Email To
Enter the email address where the test email will be sent.

Email From
The email address in the "From:" field of the test email.

Server Parameters

IP Address / Domain Name
Specify the location of the SMTP server you want to monitor.

TCP Port
Specify the location of the POP3 mail server you want to monitor. By default, the standard Port Number for POP3 communication (Port 110) is already entered.

Credential for Monitoring
The POP3 - QA, IMAP4 - QA and MAPI - QA Monitors require a Credential to transmit account and password information.

To assign a Credential:

  • Click the Select button to pop up the Credentials for Monitoring dialog
  • Select an existing Credential from the Mail category
  • To create a new Credential, click the New Credential button to start the Wizard

Note: When configuring the MAPI - QA Monitor, the Credential for Monitoring should directly reference the Windows User Account used to set up the Microsoft Outlook Email Account required by the Monitor. For additional information, refer to the MAPI - QA Monitor documentation.

Step 3: Create the new Monitor

Confirm the Monitor Name and Group Selection

Monitor Name
Enter a concise, descriptive name for the new Monitor. The Monitor Name will be displayed in the Monitors List, Monitor Status, Reports and Logs pages. Names may not be greater than 64 characters. Since ipMonitor does not use the name field to identify the Monitor internally, Monitor Names can be changed at any time without data loss.

Selected Group
From the drop-down list, select one of the existing Groups to which the new Monitor will automatically be added upon creation.

Store Monitor Statistics for Recent Activity and Historical Reports
ipMonitor will immediately begin to record test results, which are then used to generate Recent Activity and Historical Reports. This option is disabled by default.

Create
Click the Create button to exit the wizard and access the new Monitor in edit mode. You can make any final modifications to the Monitor in this mode, including setting Timing and Notification parameters.

Once you're satisfied with the configuration settings, click the OK button at the bottom of the page. The new Monitor will be displayed within the Monitors List, and can be accessed for further configuration adjustments at any time.
