How Can I Verify that Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is Functioning?

To properly monitor a Microsoft® Exchange or SQL Server, the Exchange Server and SQL Server Monitors require:

  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to be enabled and functioning properly.
  • The remote server to be accessible through a RPC connection in order to run the WMI queries.

This article describes a quick and easy method that can be used to verify that WMI is enabled and functioning correctly.

Refer to the FAQ titled "How Can I Verify That a Remote Server is Accessible through a RPC Connection?" for information on testing RPC connectivity.

Test the WMI Service
  1. Log in to the ipMonitor server.
  2. Access the Windows Start menu, click Run, then enter the following command and click OK:

         wbemtest.exe

  1. The Windows Management Instrumentation Tester will launch. Click the Connect... button.
  2. In the Namespace field, enter the following string and then click Connect:

         \\Target_Primary_IP_Address\root\cimv2

Note: Replace the Target_Primary_IP_Address variable in the above example with the actual Hostname or Primary IP Address of the target remote server, as shown below.

  1. Click the Enum Classes... button.
  2. Select the Recursive radio button without entering a "superclass" name, and then click OK.

  1. The Windows Management Instrumentation Tester will generate a list of classes. If the list does not appear, further troubleshooting may be needed to determine the root cause of the issue.

  1. Click the Close button, and then click Exit.
Troubleshooting WMI Connectivity

The Windows Management Instrumentation Tester tool is provided by Microsoft to test WMI connectivity on a system. The wbemtest.exe file is installed in the "WBEM" directory of your Windows system folder.
